Anime Review: Kuroko no Basket

The Teiko Middle School Basketball Team. The class that produced three perfect seasons in a row, with five once-in-a generation players, called “The Generation of Miracles.” There was another player who all of them respected… A legendary 6th player. An up-and-coming power player, Taiga Kagami, is just back from America. When he comes to Seirin High School, he meets the super-ordinary boy, Tetsuya Kuroko. Kagami is shocked to find that Kuroko isn’t good at basketball, in fact, he’s bad! And he’s so plain that he’s impossible to see. But Kuroko’s plainness lets him pass the ball around without the other team noticing him, and he’s none other than the sixth member of the Miracle Generation. Kuroko makes a pact with Kagami to defeat the other members of the Miracle Generation, who have all played basketball at other schools. A battle of light (Kagami) and shadow (Kuroko) begins!

This is one of the best sports anime I’ve come across for a while now. Though both seasons ended with cliffhangers, I cant wait for season 3. Kuroko no Basket has an amazing storyline. It keeps you wanting more. I liked how you get to see everyone’s story not just the main characters. I also like how the anime had a somewhat of a slice of life aspect to it. Its not always about winning. Its not always about perfection.  Its about the passion for the game which it a great message to convey. I highly recommend this anime. Its one of the top must watch anime ever made. I should also mention that the Special episodes were a cute change to the seriousness of the anime. So you might want to check them out as well.

Anime Review: Date A Live

Itsuka Shido is a high school boy. On the last day of the spring holidays, an explosion destroys the town and a girl in armor appears in front of him. Shido’s sister-in-law, Kotori, tells him that the girl is called “Special Disasterous Designated Creature: Spirit”, which causes a timespace quake. Kotori disclosed that she is the commander of the anti-spirit organization Ratatosk and orders him to go out on a date with the spirit girl. Kotori says, “I don’t ask you to beat the spirit. Just let her fall in love with you and save the world.” (Source: MAL)

General Information:

Type: TV
Episodes: 12
Status: Finished Airing
Aired: Apr 6, 2013 to Jun 22, 2013
Producers: FUNimation Entertainment, AIC Plus+, Nippon Columbia
Genres: Comedy, Mecha, Romance, School, Sci-Fi, Shounen, Harem
Duration: 23 min. per episode
Rating: R+ – Mild Nudity

I believe this anime is all about fan service. The characters are so cute, as you can see in the pictures above. Though the story is kinda weird. Basically, it’s about “spirits”, an organization that fights against them and another organization that’s based on a gal game which is kinda with and against them. The main character is kind of a perv and all the girls fall for him still. Was the story great? No, but for a Harem anime it had a decent story. Am I excited that there is a second season? Yes, for so many reasons. Oh, I almost forgot… The anime was actually good, and there was something good in the story. Not great, just good. Is the anime a must watch? No, though it is a nice anime to watch. So if your interested, watch it. If not, then don’t.

Manga Review: The Strings Dolls

One day, Shiro and his little sister, Koyori, who has been permanently crippled after an accident, download a peculiar game called “Strings Dolls.” Whenever you have someone in your camera screen, the game allows you to move them around like a puppet. Shiro and Koyori are filled with joyl to realize that this magical game can, at least temporarily, restore her ability to walk! Other people, however, use it for much less noble purposes. Among the others who have downloaded the game is a mysterious player called Miyabi, who appears to be using the game to kill off his fellow players. Will Shiro be able to track down who is behind this game, and find the murderous Miyabi before it’s too late? (Source: MU)

General Information:

Type: Manga
Volumes: 2
Chapters: 15
Status: Finished
Published: Jul 14, 2011 to Jul 12, 2012
Genres: Mystery, School, Shounen, Supernatural
Authors: Hibaru, Shunsuke (Story & Art)
Serialization: GanGan Online

The strings doll manga has a unique story. It’s about this game that’s created to control people like puppets and the game is called Strings Doll. Since its a shounen manga there’s bound to be a villain and the main character is obviously the hero. The manga’s art is pretty cool, and idea of the story is unique. The flow of the events was kinda predictable. Though it was a nice read. I also like how violent the manga got halfway through and it had a nice amount suspense. So overall the manga was good.

Aired: Oct 7, 2012 to Mar 31, 2013
Studio: A-1 Pictures
Genres: Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Shounen
Rating: PG-13 – Teens 13 or older

I’ve always been an Aladdin fan, so I was instantly attracted to this anime. I must say it exceeded my expectations. Basically Magi is inspired by Arabic literature characters, such as Alibaba, Sindibad, And so on. The fantasy there and the way the plot build up are amazing. There is magic everywhere and not in a cheesy matter. The plot is pretty outstanding, I’ve never seen a shounen anime as good as this one. I love how Aladdin is not always the hero or the main focus in the anime. You get to see all the characters stories. I also liked the fact that Sindibad is important in the anime so is morgana and Alibaba. The art and the fighting scenes are incredible. I strongly recommend the anime and am eagerly waiting for the second season which is gonna be released fall 2013.

Most Notable Spring 2013 anime

These aren’t all the spring 2013 anime, though I believe those are worth watching. I have to say that I’m glad that there are many mecha and fantasy anime this season. I’ll write down reasons why you should watch them so if your interested read the whole post.

PS. The anime are classified in alphabetical order

Aku no Hana

Genres: Drama, Romance, School, Psychological
Rating: R – 17+ (violence & profanity)

The anime is based on a popular manga with the same title. I read like the first chapter of the manga, I liked the art it is good. Though the anime has different kinda art, it’s kinda difficult to swallow at first but you’ll get used to it.

Arata Kangatari

Genres: Adventure, Fantasy, Shounen
Rating: PG-13 – Teens 13 or older

There wasn’t anything particularly unique about this anime, though it has some good action and its a good watch.

Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge

Genres: Action, Fantasy, Romance, Seinen
Rating: R – 17+ (violence & profanity)

I really liked this anime, the story it pretty weird and the main character is a weirdo. So, basically that was the reason I liked it. The anime is based on a manga with the same title, that is worth checking out.

Date A Live

Genres: Comedy, Mecha, Romance, School, Sci-Fi, Shounen
Rating: R – 17+ (violence & profanity)

As I was watching the first episode I changed my mind about the anime like 3 times. I just must say that it’s awesome. You’ll be surprised, entertained, and wouldn’t want the episode to end.

Devil’s Survivor 2

Must Watch

Genres: Demons, Supernatural
Rating: PG-13 – Teens 13 or older

Devil’s survivor is part of the Shin Megami Tensei series. The anime doesn’t have a prequel. It’s a stand alone anime titled Devil’s Survivor 2. The art of the anime is pretty awesome and I have high hopes for the story. It’s a must watch.

Ginga Kikoutai Majestic Prince

Genres: Action, Mecha, School, Sci-Fi, Seinen
Rating: PG-13 – Teens 13 or older

This anime is story is a bit unusual for a Mecha. It’s about the worst team of robot pilots there is. It’s really interesting to watch.

Haiyore! Nyaruko-san W

Genres: Comedy, Parody, Sci-Fi
Rating: R – 17+ (violence & profanity)

This is the sequel of Haiyore! Nyaruko-san, it’s a funny anime. Very entertaining to watch.

Hataraku Maou-sama!

Genres: Comedy, Demons, Fantasy, Romance, Shounen
Rating: PG-13 – Teens 13 or older

This anime reminded me of Maoyuu Maou Yuusha the way it basically began from where stories usually end, and it’s about a demon king that is good. It’s insanely funny.

Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko.

Genres: Comedy, Romance, School, Seinen
Rating: None – I’ll rate it as PG 13 since its less Ecchi than the manga buts it’s probably R.

From the title of the anime you can tell its pretty Ecchi, though leaving that fact aside it’s a pretty funny anime.

Hyakka Ryouran: Samurai Bride

Genres: Action, Comedy, Ecchi, Romance, School
Rating: R+ – Mild Nudity

It’s the sequel of Hyakka Ryouran: Samurai Girls. It’s a nice combination of action and comedy.

Kakumeiki Valvrave

Must Watch

Genres: Action, Mecha
Rating: R – 17+ (violence & profanity)

The ending of the first episode was so shocking I don’t know what to expect next. Must watch.

Genres: Action, Mystery, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Shoujo
Rating: PG-13 – Teens 13 or older

The anime title and posters are so deceiving… I though it would be a reverse harem kinda anime. Though it turned that it has awesome action, and fantasy. Not to mention that the art was incredible.

Genres: Martial Arts, Shounen
Rating: PG-13 – Teens 13 or older

It’s nice to see a Martial Arts/Supernatural anime for a change. There weren’t any anime like this for a while.

Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai.

Genres: Comedy, Slice of Life, Seinen
Rating: PG-13 – Teens 13 or older

So Kirino is back!! Need I say more?

Genres: Ecchi, Romance, School

This anime is a bit weird, I believe it’s based on a video game. The main character gets dragged into joining an Ecchi photography club.

RDG: Red Data Girl

I like the art of this anime and I love it’s fantasy. It’s promising.

This anime is so interesting. I totally recommend you to at least check it out.

Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S

Must Watch

Genres: Action, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Super Power
Rating: PG-13 – Teens 13 or older

This anime is the sequel of Toaru Kagaku no Railgun and it’s part of the Toaru Majutsu no Index series. I loved the first season of this anime so I’ve been looking forward to this one. I must say that this one seems… I mean has more action which is awesome.

Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru.

Genres: Comedy, Romance, School
Rating: PG-13 – Teens 13 or older

This anime reminded me of Ore no Kanojo to Osananajimi ga Shuraba Sugiru but like a better version. I very much enjoyed the first episode and totally love the art.

Zettai Bouei Leviathan

Genres: Fantasy
Rating: PG-13 – Teens 13 or older

Since the first episode was surprisingly good, I’ve decide it to add it to the list. It’s delightful to watch.

Anime Review: Zetsuen no Tempest

The story revolves around Mahiro Fuwa, a teenager whose sister was mysteriously murdered one year before, and his friend Yoshino Takigawa. Mahiro is contacted by Hakaze Kusaribe, the leader of the Kusaribe clan who was left stranded on an unknown deserted island by her followers, and agrees to help Hakaze in exchange for her help to find out the culprit for the death of his family. Upon learning of his friend’s intentions, Yoshino joins him on his quest to stand against the Kusaribe clan who intends to awaken the “Tree of Exodus” whose power can bring ruin to the entire world.

Several dialogues and plot elements in Zetsuen no Tempest pay homage to two works of William Shakespeare, Hamlet and The Tempest, which coincidentally are two stories about retribution, albeit with completely opposing outcomes. (Source: Wikipedia)

General information:

Alternative Title: Blast of Tempest, Zetsuen no Tempest: The Civilization Blaster
Type: TV
Episodes: 24
Status: Finished Airing
Aired: Oct 5, 2012 to Mar 29, 2013
Producers: Bones, Square Enix
Genres: Action, Mystery, Drama, Fantasy, Shounen, Psychological
Rating: PG-13 – Teens 13 or older

I just finished watching Zetsuen no Tempest and it has such a beautiful story. The story is so well written, and extremely delightful to watch. The thing I liked about this anime is the way every episode reveals a fragment of the boys past, and those fragments explain their actions and reactions. I also love how they keep quoting hamlet and tempest. Many things surprised me as I was watching the anime, like things I’ve never seen coming… Which made the anime that much more fun to watch.
I must say that the characters are weird… It takes time to see the human side in them. Most importantly the anime had an awesome ending. I totally recommend the anime you won’t regret watching it.
